President of TCU Presents SAi20 Recommendations to G20
The President of the Brazilian Federal Court of Accounts (TCU), Minister Bruno Dantas, attended the G20 Sherpa Group meeting in Rio de Janeiro on July 4th. In his capacity as the leader of SAi20, representing Supreme Audit Institutions (SAIs) within the forum, Minister Dantas presented the group’s key recommendations to approximately 200 attendees from 42 delegations and 13 engagement groups. Sherpas are special envoys from the heads of state of G20 member countries. They lead discussions toward the Leaders’ Declaration, a consensus document set to be adopted at the Rio de Janeiro Summit on November 18-19, 2024.
For the first time in the history of the world’s largest economies forum, representatives from the 13 G20 Social engagement groups joined delegates at the meeting table to present their recommendations. The G20 Social is an innovative initiative under the Brazilian presidency.
SAi20’s contributions stem from its communiqué released after the group’s late-June Summit in Belém do Pará. The document recommends that the G20 enhance transparent, responsible, and effective decision-making through two main pillars: establishing a shared international approach to quantify and report on funds allocated for fighting climate change and implementing common systems to measure and monitor multidimensional poverty, considering not only income but also factors such as education and access to infrastructure services.
Established in 2022 under Indonesia’s presidency of the G20, the SAi20 engagement group serves as a pillar for knowledge sharing and collaboration among SAIs on G20 priorities.
“On behalf of the SAi20 engagement group, I respectfully request that the esteemed Sherpas formally recognize Supreme Audit Institutions as pivotal stakeholders in the collective pursuit of a more sustainable global economy. I am confident that we can significantly contribute to the effective implementation of policies proposed in this forum,” stated Minister Bruno Dantas.
Minister Dantas, also serving as Chair of the International Organization of Supreme Audit Institutions (INTOSAI), highlighted that the SAi20 communiqué reflects these institutions’ commitment to G20 countries and the global community by monitoring national public policies aimed at fighting poverty and hunger, assessing the effectiveness of climate measures, and promoting just and inclusive energy transitions.
He highlighted ClimateScanner as a leading global initiative ensuring adherence to international climate commitments. Launched in March at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, this methodology involves 121 participating countries and aims to evaluate governmental actions against climate change. Its findings will be presented during COP29 in Azerbaijan.
Brazilian sherpa Mauricio Lyra thanked SAi20 for its dedication to discussing G20 presidency priorities, including fighting hunger, sustainable development, energy transition, and global governance. He commended the Brazilian presidency’s openness to engaging with various groups.
All sherpas, including Lyra, shared their perspectives, highlighting the importance of engagement groups in aiding the G20’s decision-making process by considering input from institutional representatives and affected populations.
